Need to find an IHSS caregiver?
If you are a Sacramento County IHSS consumer and are looking for a caregiver, please call the Caregiver Registry, (916) 874-4411. Registry staff, using sophisticated software, attempts to match caregiver applicants with consumers needing care.
When you call the registry:
- A registry specialist interviews you to determine your needs. It is important to know the number of hours your IHSS social worker authorized and the types of services authorized.
- The information you provide is entered into the registry database, which is used to match your needs with a potential caregiver's skills and availability.
- A customized list is developed and mailed to you. Lists are usually mailed within three working days from the date of request, or if the need is urgent, information can be provided by phone. Once you receive the list, you can contact the potential caregivers to set up interviews.
All registry caregivers have had a Department of Justice (DOJ) background check before being listed on the Registry. Background check information pertains only to California records during the past ten years.
Caregiver Registry staff sends with each list a booklet entitled, "How to Hire a Caregiver," which contains valuable information to assist in the hiring process. If additional assistance is needed, please contact your Registry Specialist.

Consumer Responsibilities
The IHSS consumer is responsible for hiring, firing, and supervising a caregiver. The consumer should interview potential caregivers, negotiate a work schedule, identify the work to be done, and sign timesheets. If you need help with any of this, call the Registry at (916) 874-4411.
