Do you want to be an IHSS Registry caregiver?

The Caregiver Registry enrolls people who are interested in being IHSS caregivers. The pay rate is $10.40 per hour (as of January 1, 2007), and caregivers who work and get paid 85 hours or more a month for three months in a row or more, are eligible for individual health care and dental coverage.

The Caregiver Registry has a new process for enrolling caregivers.  All people interested in applying for the registry must complete a pre-screening questionairre to determine if they will be referred to interview.  For the people referred to an interview, and accepted to the registry - you must attend a mandatory two-part orientation, provide photo identification, and pass a background check.  Effective July 1, 2009 all registry applicants must pay for their own DOJ background check.  The cost is $42.  To apply to the registry, click on the Orientation Prescreening link at the bottom this page.  If you need more information on becoming a registry caregiver, please call or email the Caregiver Registry at (916) 875-5788 email address: IHSS-PA-Caregiver-Registry@saccounty.net

Orientation and Interview Procedure

  • The orientation provides tips, advice, and general information about being a caregiver.  Scheduling of interviews takes place directly after the orientation. It is your responsibility to be on time for your orientation and interview.

  • Interviews are daily.  In addition to the interview and orientation, an additional information session is required  - a smaller group session conducted by Public Authority social workers.

  • Attendance at the interview is mandatory to move on to the next step of the application process - reference checks and orientations.

  • If you do not speak English, it is helpful to bring your own interpreter.

Before being admitted to the orientation and interview, applicants must provide the following:

  • A government-issued picture identification
  • Social Security card, proof of SS#, or your right to work in the U.S.
  • Five references (non-relatives, preferably work references)
  • First Aid, CPR, CNA, & LVN cards (if certified)

Si usted no habla inglés, es provechoso traer a su propio intérprete.
Если вы не говорите английскую язык, то полезно принести ваш собственный переводчик.

Important Information for IHSS Caregiver Registry Applicants

  • The registry is a referral service that provides information for IHSS consumers to find, screen, and hire caregivers. The registry uses a database to help match a consumer's needs with an applicant's availability, training, and preferences.  Please keep in mind, the registry does not guarantee employment.
  • To be considered for the registry you must go through our screening process. This includes: orientation, interview, providing references, and passing local and DOJ background screenings. Effective July 1, 2009 all applicants are responsible for the cost of the DOJ background screening.  Our top priority is the safety and well being of our clients, the registry consumers. Being sure that you complete and pass this process enables us to be confident in the people we are referring.
  • You will be asked about results from prior drug tests, if any, and your willingness to have drug tests.
  • IHSS consumers do all hiring, interviewing, setting job schedules, training, signing timesheets, and firing.
  • 2% of your pay goes to Union Dues/Fair Share Fees (Min: $28.00 per month, Max: $34.60 per month)

Registry Caregivers' Responsibilities

Caregivers are responsible for reporting any changes in address, telephone number, or availability for work as soon as possible. Caregivers are expected to update their registry information every month and update references monthly. Call (916) 874-4411 to update the registry. Call us to let us know when you have been hired!

Please note: The Orientation Prescreening link on this page will only be active when the Caregiver Registry is accepting new applicants.  If the color of the words Orientation Prescreening in the links below is black, then the application period is closed.  Thank you for your interest in the Caregiver Registry.
